Accepted NOV 2023 Panel Title: Understanding Policy Change Abstract : Despite its high level of influence, bringing in about 5% of the total American GDP, the platform economy has been sheltered from federal regulation. States, however, are imposing a variety of restrictions on platforms such as Airbnb, Uber, and the focus here, third-party food delivery platforms such as Postmates, GrubHub, and Doordash. While customers may find the delivery platforms indistinguishable from one another, there has yet to be scholarly investigation into evidence of regulatory homogeneity. With five possible entities to regulate: the platform, the restaurant/food provided, the consumer, the worker, and the regulatory agency, how do states decide to regulate? After collecting related regulatory statute and code text on 45 states, this paper explores how diffusion explains regulatory patterns. By specifically examining which characteristics of states are most likely to explain who states regulate, I find both external geographic and internal economic and demographic factors can predict the content of third-party food delivery platform statutes. These findings have implications for theories concerning gig/platform work regulation. (Newberry Bonghamton University) Abstract :Despite mental and physical separation of large Native Hawaiian and large Black communities, the two groups are seen as syno nymous. Throughout academic literatures, social actions, and movements, both groups and their prominent members have displayed a relationship of solidarity with one another, however Anti Blackness still remains in the island chain. The institution of education, or miseducation, I argue is predominantly to blame for this instance. Because Hawaii is antiBlack and Hawaiians are wrongly labeled as Black I argue that this leads to Hawai’i being antiHawaiian. RACE, HAWAI'I, RESISTANCE, EDUCATION, POLITICS Latina/o Studies Association Conference Accepted MAY 2020 Panel Title: The parallaxes through different institutions of representations: immigration perceptions, social media, and higher education. Abstract : How has Latine/a/o pro-sex / pro-sexuality movements grown even through cultural conservativism? How does social media complicate this parallax of sexual liberation and cultural conservativism? My work explores Latina/x pro-sex movements through Instagram and complicating the conservative culture surrounding sex in Latine communities.
